PhD Candidate, Department of Information Systems, The University of Melbourne
In my PhD I study the adoption of social network sites for activities related to peoples passions. As a first case I chose the extreme passion of bodybuilding. Using an ethnographic approach I try to unveil how bodybuilders integrate online resources with their training regimes, and how online contacts help to fuel their passion |

Interactive Art Makes Me Want to Rock Out
Most current 'exergaming' and exercise related interactive art, is very much using the art element of the work in order to encourage or cajole people to do exercise, which is seen as some kind of socially good thing. I'm going to talk about how this is boring, artistically uninteresting and is missing the point. In other more established artforms, physical activity is made an interesting and integral part of the activity, which creates altered states of mind which in turn alter the way in which the artwork is experienced. I will introduce 3 examples of projects I've worked on which use physical activity in (what I think are) interesting ways, and some general guidelines for using physical activity in interactive art.

Using biosensed data in non-medical applications
Biosensed data has been used in medical diagnosis for hundreds of years. However, with the increasing availability of cheap, reliable and portable biosensing devices, other applications are now possible, and these have included, for some time, sports heart rate monitors and computer games. I'm interested in analyzing the design of existing non-medical biosensing applications, and using this analysis to inform the design of future applications. I'm going to start in this lab talk by analyzing F:TL, O:TL and Heartlands, three MRL experiences that have made use of biosensed data in different ways. I'm going to present a tentative design framework for discussion, which I'm hoping to expand at a later date. I'm hoping that this framework might form the core of a PhD, and I'm hoping to get some comments on what I've presented from members of the lab.

Baghdad 2009
'Baghdad 2009 ' is an interactive artwork that illustrates for the viewer the process of creating a live public projection artwork for the city of Baghdad. The content produced by artist Theresa Caruana represents her steps along the creative journey that concludes with a large-scale public artwork in Baghdad. The social, scientific, technological and historical information relating to Rivers and Baghdad that inspire Caruanas creative process are mapped within 'Baghdad 09 ' for the viewer to explore. The piece will be presented at the Benjamin Franklin House museum in London on the 22nd June. We will be presenting and testing the installation during the lab talk with an emphasis on giving you all ample chance to have a go and give feedback in order to influence our presentation of it in London.

I will give a debrief on the "Ulrike and Eamon Compliant" project with Blast Theory that myself and Martin worked on for the Venice Biennale last month. I'll also give an overview of the EDUCATE EU project I'm starting to work on with Brian Logan -- a collaboration with the School of the Built Environment and various European schools of architecture -- to build an e-learning portal for teaching students about environmentally sustainable/energy efficient building design.

External talk by Will Bowden - The invisible town as a visitor experience
The Roman town at Caistor St. Edmund in Norfolk was abandoned around 1200 years ago. What was a planned town with streets, baths, temples and a population of thousands now lies beneath open fields grazed by sheep. Caistor is now the focus of a University of Nottingham research project aimed at answering some key questions relating to the town and its history. However, conveying the idea of the town to the visiting public and allowing them to experience something of what the town was like is extremely difficult when the reality is a flat and fairly uninteresting field. With Gary Priestnall from the School of Geography I am exploring ways of using mobile technologies to provide visitors with informative and enjoyable ways to experience the site that will also allow them to question the interpretations they are given.

The focus of our cluster research is to investigate how digital technology can be used to facilitate the creation of new models of creative practice. In this broad field we concentrate our research on practices which have outputs of physical artefacts (all cluster members have backgrounds as craft or design practitioners). You can learn more about our cluster on: www.autonomatic.org.uk As a cluster we are very keen to establish links with other research groups and centres and therefore keen to learn more about MRL and explore possible avenues for linking up. Furthermore, I am currently working on a commission for a immersive exhibition concept for the Craft Council, which is likely to include to use of mixed reality, therefore I thought it would be interesting to make contact to MRL in relation to this particular project.

MRL Lab Talk List
The list below shows all the people currently part of the MRL. It is ordered by the date they last gave a talk if it was recorded. This should give an indication of when each person is expected to be scheduled. Anyone scheduled above has been moved to the end of the list in corresponding order. For any corrections or updates, please contact Stef, as above.
